How to show up in Google's AI Overviews

Published 3 July 2026 · 7 min read

Google's AI Overviews are built from the same pages Googlebot already indexes for Search, so showing up in them starts with strong, crawlable, trustworthy Search content — not a separate channel. Here's what makes a page eligible, and the one setting people block by mistake.

AI Overviews run on Google's existing index

Google's AI Overviews summarise an answer at the top of the results and link the sources behind it. The pages they draw on come from Google's existing Search index, crawled by Googlebot — not from a separate AI crawler the way ChatGPT or Perplexity work. Being eligible for an AI Overview therefore starts with being well-indexed in ordinary Google Search.

Step 1: Stay crawlable for Googlebot

Googlebot is the crawler that matters here. Confirm your robots.txt doesn't disallow Googlebot and that your important pages return a 200 status and aren't set to noindex. A page Google can't crawl or index can't appear in Search or in an AI Overview.

The setting people block by mistake: Google-Extended

Google-Extended is the control most often misunderstood. Google-Extended is a separate token that governs whether your content helps train Gemini and Vertex AI — it is not Googlebot, and blocking it does not remove you from Google Search or from AI Overviews. You can opt out of AI training with Google-Extended and still appear in Overviews, because those are served through Googlebot and the Search index.

Step 2: Answer the question clearly and early

AI Overviews lift concise, direct answers. A page that states its answer plainly near the top, under a heading that matches the question, gives Google a clean passage to summarise and attribute. Burying the answer beneath preamble makes a page harder to feature.

Step 3: Earn the trust signals Search already rewards

Eligibility leans on the same trust Google Search looks for. Clear authorship, accurate and well-sourced content, and a solid page experience all help a page be treated as a credible source worth citing in an Overview. Thin or unsupported content is a weak candidate even when it's crawlable.

Step 4: Use structured data where it fits

Structured data helps Google understand your page. Marking up genuine question-and-answer content with FAQPage schema, or articles with Article schema, makes the role of each part of the page explicit. Add markup only where it matches the real content — mismatched markup helps nobody.

How AI Overviews differ from ChatGPT and Perplexity

The key difference is the crawler. ChatGPT and Perplexity run their own search crawlers and their own indexes, while AI Overviews reuse Google's existing Search index and Googlebot. That makes Overviews the surface where strong traditional SEO and GEO overlap most: the crawlability, clarity and trust that earn good Search rankings are largely the same things that make a page eligible for an Overview.

Common reasons a page isn't featured

Most gaps come from a short list. The page may not be indexed in Google Search at all; it may bury its answer where no concise summary can be drawn; it may be thin or unsupported next to more authoritative sources; or the query may simply not trigger an Overview. The first three are within your control; the fourth isn't.

How to check whether you appear in AI Overviews

Search your target questions in Google and look at whether an AI Overview appears and which sources it links. Google Search Console shows your impressions and the queries you surface for, which helps you see where you're already eligible. The free Site Check at Sailiently confirms the crawlability foundation underneath it all.

What's outside your control

AI Overviews are dynamic, and that limits what you can promise. They don't appear for every query, the sources they cite change over time, and there's no setting that forces your inclusion. You control whether your page is eligible — crawlable, clear and trustworthy — not whether the Overview features it on a given search.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls AI-training use only. Google Search and AI Overviews are served through Googlebot and the Search index, so opting out of training with Google-Extended doesn't affect your eligibility for Overviews.
Are AI Overviews the same as ranking number one?
No. Being indexed and trusted makes you eligible to be cited in the Overview, which is separate from the blue-link ranking below it. A page can be cited in an Overview without holding the top organic position.
Do I need different content for AI Overviews versus Search?
Largely the same. Clear, answer-first, well-sourced content that serves Google Search also serves AI Overviews. You're not writing a separate page for each.
Why did my AI Overview citation disappear?
AI Overviews are generated dynamically and don't show for every query or every time. Variation in whether an Overview appears, and which sources it cites, is normal rather than a penalty.
Do AI Overviews send traffic to my site?
They can. AI Overviews link the sources behind the summary, so a cited page can earn clicks, though the summary may also answer the user without one. Being the cited source is what gives you the chance at the visit.
Is appearing in AI Overviews worth optimising for separately?
Not as a separate track. Because Overviews use Googlebot and the Search index, the work overlaps almost entirely with good SEO and the rest of your GEO. Optimise once for clear, crawlable, trustworthy content and you serve both.
Does structured data guarantee an AI Overview?
No. Structured data helps Google understand your page, but it guarantees nothing. It's a comprehension aid, not a placement lever.
How do I know if my page was used in an AI Overview?
Google Search Console reports the queries and impressions your pages earn, and AI Overview appearances are increasingly reflected there. Searching your target questions directly and noting the cited sources is the simplest manual check.
